We are Empress. We are a design studio. We marry imaginative design to rock solid project management. We work across print, web, marketing and the occasional project that defies neat categorisation.

Most of our business is repeat business. A lot of our new projects are via recommendations from people we've worked with before. This makes us happy. Presumably it means our clients are happy too.

If you'd like to know more about us, have a look at some of our recent work or give us a call.

November 2007
Empress has just been successful (go team!) in a competitive pitch for a Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site project. The campaign aims to encourage locals and visitors to interact with, and celebrate, the ten amazing World Heritage Sites across Cornwall and West Devon. Continuing our new theme of collaboration, we'll be working with the excellent Lowestudio on this exciting project.

In other news - happy birthday Jubilee Wharf! We’ve just celebrated our first year working from the Empress riverside pied-a-terre by, um, coming in to the studio to work hard and make beautiful things. For future presentation is a whole family of new websites called automake, autochina and autonomatic. Plus a dazzlingly gorgeous book printed entirely with fluorescent colours, and some innovative learning materials. So you come back soon, yes?

August 2007
Summer is over, seemingly before it even started, and fresh off the press for your perusal is the Creative Skills Autumn newsletter. And not only! But also! Cast your eye over some wonderfully bright new stationery for Creative Steps, a plethora of cunningly camouflaged promotional print for Hidden Art Cornwall and several new websites.

February 2007
As promised, some new work on our site. We've been doing a lot of print work; next up lots of web. So hot off the press that it's not made it to our site yet; posters, invites and books aplenty for the Autonomatic 3D Digital Production research cluster at University College Falmouth. On this site soon so keep 'em peeled.

December 2006
Well, its the end of another year at Empress and quite frankly we're greatly looking forward to our holiday. But fear not because our first New Year's Resolution of 2007 will be to update our site with some of the new projects we've been working on this year. So do, please, watch this space...and a very happy festive season to you all.

A hearty Empress Wilkommen to our inaugural Intern, Mr John Bell, who's currently studying for a BA in Graphic Design at University College Falmouth (when he's not being our Intern).

Nice people duly found, we have moved into our new super-duper riverside office, designed by esteemed architects Bill Dunster Architects ZEDfactory Ltd. This has made us very happy! Sharing the studio with us are environmental marketeers SEA and illustrator extraordinaire Linda Selby and very welcome they are indeed.

In our lovely new office we are working on promotional materials, catalogue and a micro-site for the Autonomatic 3D Digital Production Research Cluster at University College Falmouth who are organising an exhibition in London for early next year. More details nearer the time.

Nice people needed

We've outgrown our current office and are hoping to move into new premises at the beginning of October and I cannot tell you how excited we are about this. However the new space is a little bit bigger than we need so we're looking for someone to share with us. It's in a lovely, brand spanking new development in Penryn with a view over the river - plus, the rent's a steal. If you'd like some more info give Katherine a call or drop us a line over email.

Hidden Art Design Fair
We recently won a competitive pitch process to design the materials for Cornwall's first ever Design Fair. It will be taking place over the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend at Godolphin House near Helston. We're also running a game at the Fair; do drop by and say hello, or just come and admire our Joyce Grenfell impression as we spend the Bank Holiday weekend saying: 'George don't do that...'

July 2006
Some new clients

We've been so busy beavering away that we've hardly had a chance to sit down and tell you about some of the projects we're working on. First up is print materials and a website for a Camborne School of Mines project, involving a wireless controlled robot designed to go into mines and survey areas where it might not be safe for miners to go. If only every client meeting involved an offer to drive a robot around the office.

As far removed from robots as you can possibly get are the materials we're working on for the Great Bustard Group. The Great Bustard is the world's heaviest flying bird and has been extinct in Britain since 1832. We're working with the Great Bustard Group on promotional materials and branding for a project to re-introduce the bird to Britain.

Lastly, for the second year running we're working on the Student Handbook for University College Falmouth. Developed in conjunction with UCF graphics and photography students, this year's handbook is taking shape as an innovative pack of limited-edition materials designed around the theme of interaction and inclusion.

March 2006
Empress is delighted to welcome top marketing and publicity lady and all round good egg Katherine Smith to the fold as our new Account Manager. Katherine will be joining us shortly from the GLA (that's the Greater London Authority to us non-Londoners) where she has been heading up the Recycle for London campaign. She will henceforth be in charge of everything word related at Empress. Hurrah! If you want to exchange some words with Katherine, contact her via katherine@empress-design.co.uk. She'll be mighty chuffed to hear from you.

February 2006
Two new websites for you, dear reader, to look at; for University College Falmouth's 3D Digital Research Cluster, the AUTONOMATIC website at http://www.autonomatic.org.uk

Also a portfolio site for Matt Robinson, sculptural builder and designer

Empress launch new website!

We finally have our new site up and running. It features a lot more portfolio work, encompassing some of the projects we've done since we started, which cover allsorts, from print and web, to installations and art projects, as well as the odd esoteric aside. Feedback and comments gratefully received (as long as it is good)

Lizzie leaves!
After 3 years as part of Empress, co-founder Lizzie Ridout is off to pastures new, where she will be grazing in the lush fields of academia as a lecturer on graphic design programmes at University College Falmouth and Univeristy of Plymouth, as well as continuing to make her own fabulous artwork. She'll be sorely missed but we wish her the best of British. If you want to contact Lizzie, you can get her at info@lizzieridout.com.

Empress Hearts Meringue
Lizzy H and Helene are pleased to announce the launch of Meringue, our new venture specialising in contemporary wedding stationery for the (post) modern bride and groom, tailored to suit. We're online at www.meringue-design.co.uk

'Tanks and Tablecloths'

We're working on a research collaboration investigating links between the military and the domestic. This project will take the form of a series of exhibitions - starting Thursday 4th – Saturday 6th November 2004 at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall - and a limited edition publication.

We are gathering personal accounts and visual material which incorporate the military and the home in a single object, story or picture. Contributions will help to inspire further research and new works of art, some of which will be made on-site at Newlyn.

Examples could include anything from air-raid shelter construction manuals to army marching songs, to wartime cookbooks or uniforms, from the Great War to the Cold War. Please come along to the gallery if you can and bring a photograph, object or just a story or memory. We will be there to record and photograph what you bring.
